Automatic Cold Start Device (ACSD) Delete Kit -

For a discussion of what the ACSD does, and why you may want to remove it, or even keep it, see below.

Hardware consists of the following:
- 1x Timing Cover plate
- 1x Viton Timing Cover O-Ring
- 1x steel tube spacer - 9.5mm O.D. X 30 mm Long
- 2x Allen head screws - 6mm x1.0 thread X 16mm Long
- 2x 6mm flat washers
- 2x MAH5 hose clamps
- 1x 12" 3/8" ID heater hose

Note: The pump timing may need to be adjusted due to the ACSD being removed, this will exhibit itself by the engine being harder to start than normal.

Another attribute that you should be aware of is that with the ACSD removed the engine will no longer idle up when cold, to remedy this you should set the hand throttle up just slightly when the engine is cold for a minute or two, this will allow the engine to idle more smoothly while it warms up.

What does the ACSD do?:
When the engine is cold, the ACSD slightly advances the injection timing and engine idle to promote a smooth engine start and idle while the engine warms up.

As warm coolant circulates through the ACSD, a pushrod extends out returns the injection pump to its base timing and idle speed when full operating temperature is reached.

Why should I consider removing the ACSD?:
The ACSD mechanism is prone to leaking, metal fatigue, and wearing out as it ages.

The ACSD seals to the side of the injection pump with an o-ring, and is held in place with 2 allen head cap screws. This o-ring can leak as it ages and becomes stiff, but is not difficult to replace.

The real problem is the portion of the start device that protrudes inside the pump has a metal bead attached to a short lever arm that can break off (age, vibration-->fatigue). When this part breaks off, it gets circulated around inside the internals of the injection pump which are spinning at half of engine RPM - and this quickly destroys the injection pump and contaminates the pump and injectors with metal debris.

The damage means a completely new injection pump will need to be obtained/built-up, and the injectors will also need to be serviced - both of these are expensive.

Do I need to check my injection timing after removing the ACSD?:
When the injection timing is adjusted to its base timing, the ACSD is supposed to be disengaged during the pump timing procedure. Often enough, the ACSD is not properly disengaged and base timing is not set properly.

As a result, it is a good idea to check and reset the base timing after ACSD removal, and especially if the engine sounds or runs differently that it did prior to removal and after being fully warmed up.

The engine idle speed may also need to be adjusted back to specification after removal, and after engine warm-up.
