DXA433MHO - 12Volt 160 Amp High Output Alternator for Land Cruiser HDJ80, HZJ80, HDJ81 / HZJ81 - fits the 1PZ, 1HZ, 1HDT, 1HDFT, 1HDFTE engines.
Suits Land Cruisers from 01/1990 to 11/2006

Alternators are automatically shipped with insurance included in the event of shipping damage.

Kit Contents:
• 12V 160A Denso style alternator with both Active an Inactive options for the charge lamp
• Round/oval adapter plug assembly to connect to early and late wiring harnesses
• 240cm long x 16mm² (~5 Ga) alternator to battery cable with a 175A inline Slo-Blo Mega Fuse

Needed for most installations:
If you do not already have an upgraded or later version alternator that has the larger case size, you will need to replace the adjusting bar to make this fit. See: Adjusting Bar
• All early HDJ80 / HDJ81s will require a new adjusting bar if you are replacing the factory alternator.
• On later models, about the 1993 model year, it's a fairly straightforward installation as these usually came with a larger cased alternator from the factory.

Recommended: Replace your alternator belts with a new set! Old belts just won't cut it with a new higher output alternator.

You have 2 choices, cogged or non-cogged belts:
Cogged Alternator Belts: 90916-02452 = 2 belt set
Non-Cogged Alternator Belts: 90916-02452 = 2 belt set

Important Installation Notes:
• The installation of this alternator requires the use of the supplied harness and fuse. The factory wiring is not capable of handling the current this alternator can produce.
• If you are at all unsure about how to properly install this alternator and the related upgrade harness and fuse, please get a licensed / qualified automotive service technician with experience in 24V/12V electrical systems to perform the work for you.
• Alternator failures due to improper installation or improper use are not covered under warranty.
• Vehicle electrical system failures, burned wiring harnesses, and vehicle fires are also not covered under warranty.
• Failure to properly install the provided upgraded alternator to battery wire and fuse may lead to burning up your factory wiring harness and/or your vehicle.

A second really set of really important notes for JDM HDJ81 owners:
• The wiring for the alternator in grey market JDM HDJ81s that use the 24v/12v changeover relay for starting requires a somewhat more complex installation of the upgraded alternator to battery wire that is provided.
• If you are unfamiliar with this system, and how it is wired, and how to properly upgrade the harness, then please ask a very experienced automotive technician with specific electrical experience in working with 24V/12V change-over systems.
The upgraded harness wire must NEVER be directly wired to the Left Hand battery.
• As a side note, there should never be any accessories drawing current from the Left Hand battery on JDM HDJ81s as this battery switches over to 24 Volts during engine cranking. Accessories connected to this battery may "see" 24V while the engine is cranking.

The alternator replaces the following Toyota part numbers:
27060-17020 (12V 60A)
27060-17040 (12V 100A)
27060-17180 (12V 100A 01/1995-03-1995)
27060-17181 (12V 100A 04/1996-07/1996)

Part Number:
DXA433MHO

These are brand new aftermarket units. No core required.

Common signs of alternator failure in HDJ80/HDJ81 are:

Weak or dead batteries is the No. 1 cause of early alternator failure!

• Instrument cluster lights coming on when the engine is running - this appears as a "check bulb sequence" that happens when you turn on the key but before you start the engine but happens while the engine is running. This is usually caused by the voltage regulator failing and is usually a "once and done" kind of failure - meaning you won't get any more output voltage.

• Low voltage at the voltmeter after the engine has been running for several minutes and after glow plug post-glow feature has turned off - which can take up to a few minutes. This can be caused by diode failures or the brushes wearing out.

• On JDM HDJ81s that use the 12V-24V starting system: if you are experiencing lower battery voltage at the left hand battery, check the 12V-24V changeover relay. As the contacts inside these relays wear, they may not allow enough current to pass through to the left hand battery. Also, do not tap 12V accessory electrical loads from the left hand battery as your accessories may be supplied with 24v during engine cranking.

• Alternators typically first fail/wear out in the 180,000km - to 220,000km mileage window depending on how and where they were used. If you alternator has been in service for longer than this amount of time/mileage, then you should either physically remove it and have it inspected, have it rebuilt, or replace it with a higher output unit such as the one listed here before it fails in the middle of nowhere.

NB: For use in Japanese Market HDJ81s, use it in the 'active' position for activation the glow circuit and charge lamp

Notes:

Ensure your batteries are fully charged and in good condition OR replaced them with new units before hooking up this new alternator. It is suggested that you use Group 27 batteries as these are the correct size and fitment for most Land Cruisers using this alternator.

Make sure your battery terminals and connections are in excellent condition. If your battery terminals are old and not making good contact, replace them with high quality (brass) battery terminals.

Ensure your frame and engine block ground points are clean and tight. Check the connections at the 12V-24V change-over relay on the left side just aft of the battery.

Most JDMs arrive in their new home with ancient, low performing batteries still in place - the vast majority of these batteries are junk. We recommend you install two new high quality group 27 (or larger) batteries in their place.

Alternators MUST be run with the alternator harness and power output (B+) leads properly connected to clean and tight connections.

The harness connector and the B+ leads must NOT be connected or disconnected while the engine is running and the system powered up (this is the case with ALL alternators with internal regulation) or the voltage regulator and/or diodes may suffer from instantaneous catastrophic failure.

The voltage regulator is controlled by the three wire harness connection, and without the voltage regulator connected the alternator will not produce power at all.

If you kill your new alternator by connecting it incorrectly, or to weak or dead batteries, there will be no warranty (yes, we can tell if you have done this upon inspection!).
