This is the steel ball bearing that sits in the starter motor solenoid housing that the solenoid plunger pushes against to engage the starter drive gear... and it's easy to lose if you're not paying attention and it falls out during starter solenoid repairs.
Get one or even a few of these when you're doing your starter rebuild... they're cheap, and will save you a world of frustration searching for it on your garage floor late at night when you're trying to get your starter to work.
Replace the starter solenoid plunger return spring at the same time. These spring have a tendency to lose their springiness over time and don't work properly anymore (28165-77090)
