Glass runs get replaced when the rubber has aged and starts to get stiff and less pliable.
The reason for replacing them is they cause the window to have greatly increased resistance to movement up and down which drags on the window lift motors causing them to lose their ability to raise and lower the windows. The increased drag on the window lift motors in turn increases the amount of current passing through the window switches, causing them to wear out prematurely.
Replacing the glass runs can go one of two ways: some glass runs will slide up and out of the window glass channel relatively easily and intact(without a piece breaking off). If they come out intact, often enough you can slide the new one back down the channel and then use the window motor up/down to carry the glass run into position.
It's important to get the glass run into its proper position with respect to the angles and curves, and then make sure it's properly seated into place.
If the glass run has broken into pieces, and this sometimes happens to the lower parts (the legs). The legs can get stuck in the channel and won't come up. If this happens, you're going to have to remove the door panel, carefully peel back the vapor barrier - which must remain intact to protect the door panel (and you must repair or replace it if you tear it), and then work the glass run into position after removing the broken off piece.
