Slip Ring, Electric Locking Hub

These slip rings are for the 1990 and later Land Cruiser and Prado models with factory electric locking hubs.

Suits models such as: HZJ71, HZJ73, HZJ77, LJ71, LJ78, KZJ71, KZj78 and other related models.

Sometimes the slips rings will develop a crack and not conduct current, or very occasionally they will wear out if not lubricated properly.

The slip rings are an important part of the hub bearing adjustment nut system as models that use the slip ring to hold the hub nut in place to prevent it from coming off by way of keying into the bearing spindle and the 3 torx (T20) screws that lock it into place with the nut.

Note: The Torx screws can be very tricky to remove if they have been in place for a long time and they will often strip the torx head out or break the tip off the T20 tool.

Tips for removal: There are a few ways to get these to loosen off when they are being difficult: one method is to use a flat-ended punch with a relatively wide end (so as to not damage the slip ring surface or break the brass slip rings) and to strike the punch with a small hammer to impact the slip ring near the screw while another person is applying torque to the screw with a T20 torx socket on a 1/4" drive ratchet or a 1/4" drive mini breaker bar. 3/8" tools work as well, but 1/4” offer better control. The objective is to have the impact from the punch displace the ring momentarily, permitting the screw to turn.

Another way to get the screws to back off is to use a hand-operated impact driver - and hammer the driver !!gently!! - as you apply loosening pressure to the screw - this has a similar but somewhat different effect to the above method. Using a hand impact driver does have the tendency to break the T20 driver bits, however, so have a few spare T20 tips on hand (and buy lifetime warranty tools!).

Be careful not to apply too much force as these screws can strip the torx drive in the screw or break the end of the torx socket/screwdriver rather easily.

Important: Tips for re-instsalling your Electric Locking Hubs: The electric locking hubs have two small electrical contact brushes per hub.

These must be retracted when you re-install the hub of you will break them off, rendering your hubs useless. Spare parts are not available from Toyota.

There is a small sticker written in Japanese (if it's still there) that tells you to push the brushes back, and insert a paperclip into the tiny hole to hold the brushes back during installation. Once the hub is in place, pull the paperclip out and the brushes will spring into place.
