A high quality universal joint with internal seals, which is the same design as the Genuine Toyota joints.
The larger 64mm u-joint that was used from 1974 (with the introduction of the 4 speed transmission) & up.
Insufficient grease, or not replacing the grease after a 4WD trip is the #1 cause of premature u-joint failure in 4WD vehicles.
When greasing your u-joints make sure clean grease is coming out of each cup. Getting the joint to grease properly may necessitate jacking up the wheels to unload the driveshaft and joints; loaded joints don't always take grease well. Or, applying pressure to the cups where grease is coming out to promote grease flow on the cups with no grease flow. At the very worst, you may have to partially of fully remove the u-joint to restore proper grease flow, and then re-install it.
Other common causes of failure are unbalanced or vibrating shafts (check for dents or bends), shafts with poor alignment and poor end to end phasing, or that have loose yokes or companion flanges.
Pro Tip: The grease fitting on these joints is off-set to one side, and requires careful marking on removal and installation to ensure you will be able to get a grease gun to connect to the fitting after installation. Check your Factory Service Manual for more details on how to position the u-joint on installation.
Note: the front u-joints in 80 Series Land Cruisers use a slightly smaller joint that can be found under the following part numbers: 04371-35031, 04371-35050, 04371-04351, 04371-60070.
