JIS screwdrivers are designed to correctly fit the "cross-point" or "cross-head" screws found on Japanese-made vehicles.

Using an American Phillips style cross-head style screwdriver - which does not fit JIS screws - will often lead to the head of the screw stripping out almost immediately, and then the user of the incorrect screwdriver will complain that screws are crap or they are too soft. The reality is that you were using the  wrong tool for the job...

The other side of the story is the JIS cross style screwdrivers do quite well on Phillips screws and are almost identical to the European screws of the same shape.

There's a lot more to the story of screwdriver design and the related international design standards, but in a nutshell if you're not using the correct screwdrivers on your Japanese vehicle, you're probably experiencing a lot of grief when it comes to removing screws without damaging them.
